Kihon are basics; they are the fundamental body postures and movements which make up the art. Kata are a series of techniques assembled as a physical textbook of martial knowledge. Bunkai is the interpretation of self defense techniques from the kata. There are literally hundreds of techniques contained in each kata. The study of the kata and bunkai are the heart and core of karate jitsu. Through this training, the martial artist internalizes self defense movements, to the point where that they become unconscious and natural. Kata movements also serve the purpose of disguising their most effective techniques. These are deciphered through systematic study with a qualified instructor.
